About Free Camps Australia

Free Camps Australia maps every free camp I can find across AU. The starting list comes from open data (OpenStreetMap contributors plus state and federal government open datasets). I add my own notes when I visit somewhere in person.

Who runs it

I am Joel Bauer, based in Adelaide, South Australia. I run Joel the Nerd, a web and SEO shop in Adelaide. I verify camps in person when I travel through SA. This directory is open data from OpenStreetMap and government parks, with my own notes added.

How entries are sourced

• Geographic and tag data comes from OpenStreetMap via the Overpass API. Pulled monthly.
• Background descriptions come from Wikipedia via the public REST API, when a matching article exists.
• Where I have visited a site personally, my notes appear in the description. Those entries are dated.
• If you spot an entry that is out of date, please send a correction.

A note on accuracy

Listings reflect data at time of last sync. Conditions and rules change. Always check on-site signage and follow local rules, including fire bans, dog regulations and access closures.

Licence and reuse

Map data and entity records are derivative works of OpenStreetMap and remain under the Open Database Licence (ODbL). Wikipedia summaries are CC BY-SA. Editorial copy I have written on this site is © 2026 Joel Bauer.
